High Definition Surveying – How Can it Benefit Your Company?

September 4, 2010

High definition surveying-also known as 3D laser surveying-is well known for the benefits that it brings to manufacturing companies. However, there are some manufacturing companies-typically small to midsized companies-that still use traditional surveying methods in an attempt to cut costs. Unfortunately, using older surveying methods rarely results in lower surveying costs. In fact, it usually results in higher costs than companies would pay if they hired a 3D surveying service.

Whereas traditional surveying methods require prolonged involvement by the surveyor and commonly yield less than accurate results, laser surveying-also known as laser scanning-reduces the cost of surveying by offering accurate results in as little as one surveying session. When companies use laser scanning, they can view an object’s data results according to three basic data models: polygon mesh models, which are typically used to conceptualize an object; surface models, which are used to model the surface of an object; and solid CAD models, which are used to incorporate design intent and can be directly manufactured from.

Regardless of which scanning application meets your company’s needs, laser scanning can improve your company’s product quality, shorten its production cycles and increase its manufacturing efficiency. In many cases, long production cycles, low manufacturing efficiency and mediocre product quality is based on nothing more than inaccurate data produced by traditional surveying methods.

The product defects that result from this inaccuracy remain hidden to the naked eye and are impossible to detect with analogue and GPS technology. But laser scanning offers quality inspection modules, such as colormap deviation, cross section analysis and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, that reveal defects that result from the following flaws, among others: thickness deviation, boundary deviation, reference geometry deviation and virtual edge deviation.

If you have ever purchased a product whose inner workings experienced significant wear in a short period of time or a product whose covering, lid, door or attachment pieces didn’t conform to their settings, you probably purchased a product that didn’t benefit from high definition surveying. Products that contain the deviations mentioned above don’t always malfunction, but they do present as consumer unfriendly products that can poison consumers’ perception of a certain brand, regardless of its future quality.

If this is something that your company can’t afford, then it’s time to take a look at how laser scanning can benefit your manufacturing process at an affordable price. To increase the quality of your products and the efficiency of your manufacturing process, contact a high definition surveying company to hear how you can benefit from high definition surveying today.

In my research on high definition surveying, I’ve found that laser surveying can be the difference between success and mediocrity in manufacturing.

Coffee Bean Grading – A World of Acronyms For Coffee Beans – HG, HB, SHB and SS!

August 31, 2010

Generally speaking, “grade” is used to indicate the size of the coffee bean. It is associated with coffee quality. Coffee beans grown at higher elevations, for the most part, are denser, bigger and have better flavor than beans grown at lower altitudes. Perforated containers called “sieves” are used to pass un-roasted beans through the container holes to determine the coffee bean size or “grading.” Coffee grading varies by country and may include qualifications such as bean size, bean density, number of defects, altitude of cultivation, taste and more.

As an example, coffee beans called AA or Grade 18 beans, pass through a sieve with an 18/64″ diameter holes and are retained by the next smaller sieve with a 16/64″ diameter holes. Traditionally, Arabica beans receive “even grades” such as 20, 18, 16 and so on. Robusta beans, on the other hand, receive “odd grades’ such as 17, 15, 13 and so on.

Other grades that are commonly used are “high grown” (HG), “hard bean” (HB) or “strictly hard bean” (SHB), and “strictly soft” (SS) beans. What differentiates these grades from one another?

“High Grown” (HG), “Hard Bean” (HB) or “Strictly Hard Bean” (SHB) grades refer to coffee grown at altitudes about 4,000 to 5,000 feet above sea level. Coffee beans at these altitudes mature more slowly and grow to be harder and denser than beans grown at lower altitudes. High grown beans tend to have consistent taste attributes that make them more desirable and more expensive than other coffees from lower elevations. In general, HG and HB mountainside coffee is shade grown, hand picked, chemical free or organic and is considered specialty coffee.

“Strictly Soft” (SS) beans are grown at altitudes lower than 4,000 feet. These beans mature quickly and produce a less dense, lighter bean. The coffees from these beans can have more inconsistencies in flavor and taste attributes. For example, SS Arabica beans have a more “rounded flavor” as compared to the more flavorful and dense HG or SHB Arabica beans grown at higher elevations.

The question you may be asking yourself is: what difference does this grading system make to people’s lives?

  • Actually, a huge difference. Coffee is the second highest traded commodity in the world after petroleum.
  • There are millions and millions of people around the world whose lives depend on the coffee trade.
  • Coffee grading allows farmers to see tangible differences in their lives. Grades of coffees that are more desirable, such as HB, SHB or HG, command higher prices.
  • This means more money for medical care, social services, education, infrastructure development, environmentally focused business and living practices and much more.
  • In order to qualify and maintain certifications for specific coffee grades, coffee farmers are required to adhere to specific codes of ethic and farming practices or they lose their opportunity for stable buying markets.
  • The trend towards shade grown coffee in many coffee producing countries where they can increase this type of production is not an accident but the result of observation of actual success by shade grown coffee growers.
  • There is also a recognition of the many benefits for the environment, wildlife, flora, and society in general when land is not cleared of all trees and vegetation for ’sun growing” and, instead, trees and bushes are maintained to provide the shade coffee bushes need.

So, the next time you are ready for a cup of coffee, consider drinking a delicious cup of Costa Rican SHB decaffeinated coffee!

Science Products Can Be Used to Teach Various Concepts to Children

August 29, 2010

As most teachers know, science is an integral part of a child’s education. Therefore, having the appropriate science products available in the classroom is crucial to ensure that students are getting a well-rounded education. They can range from small pieces that show kids the basics of science to larger items that are perfect for major experiments. You are advised to check out what is available before you shop for science products.

If you are not sure where to begin, consider purchasing kits that provide demonstrations to students. For example, a screen sieves kit allows students to investigate soil to find out what it is made up of. Soil and rock samples can be easily separated with this kit that includes pans and mesh for best results. Another kit focuses on the study of electricity. It includes a guide for teachers, a workbook for students, and various circuits and fuses. Such kits make it easy to get to know the basics of some crucial elements of science.

Every classroom needs at least a few science products that demonstrate basics in a simple way. A torso model is perfect when you are teaching students about the human body, as it is easy for kids to look at a plastic model up close in order to see all the inner workings on their own. The exterior portrays the muscular and skeletal systems while the inside encloses various internal systems. Some organs, such as the heart, can even be removed so that children can really get a hands-on look at this aspect of science. If you are currently teaching about the cells that make up plants and animals, there are also appropriate models for this subject, allowing children to observe up close what they are learning about.

If you like science products that are both informative and fun, and plan to teach your students how water works, there is a particular item you might like. It is referred to as a stream table, which allows students to make their own streams and lakes to learn how they work. Learning about deltas, erosion, and how beaches are formed can be made fun with these science products, and most carts come with wheels to make them easy to move and put away. Kids of any age will appreciate this method of teaching.

Most teachers find it useful to have a classroom full of items that help educate kids about several subjects. Fortunately, there are plenty of science products available to help teach children about nearly any science topic. You may consider purchasing just a few products for your own classroom, or maybe decide to go in with another teacher and purchase various science products that a few classrooms can share. Either way, your job will be made easier, and children will benefit from a more memorable learning experience.

Alycia Shapiro is in charge of product development at http://www.sensoryedge.com You’ll find an incredible selection of high quality items for schools & homes that encourage pretend play, education, and having fun. Learn more about SensoryEdge and their kids classroom furniture & science products.

Equipment for the Gardener – Make Your Life Easier And Save Time With The Right Tools

August 22, 2010

If you don’t have a tool shed or room where you can keep your tools, as well as insecticides, fertilizers, stakes, paint, wire and other equipment a well-prepared gardener should have, arrange to make some space available in your garage, or build a locker in a corner of your breezeway or carport. As another option a tool shed could be added lean-to fashion to your garage or exterior wall.

There are basic tools everybody needs, including a metal shank spade or, even better, the easier-to-handle and extremely useful spading fork, and the small, handy planting shovel.

Then, so you will have them when you need them, carry your steel shank hand trowel, hand fork and hand cultivator in a hand box, bucket or basket,. An iron or bow rake is another fundamental, of course, and so is a broom rake. A weed spud for hand removal of weeds is another favorite instrument, and a good pair of shears or hand pruners is indispensable. Other musts include your garden hose, watering can and wheelbarrow.

Not as vital but certainly useful are an edging sickle, lawn edger or grass-edging shears; pole-pruning shears, hedge shears and lopping shears. Also, a deep cultivator such as a potato hoe; a dibble for seedlings; a stapling gun; a pruning saw and soil sieves. For your hose, its nice to have a reel and possibly a portable sprinkler. A wand for soaking the soil without getting water on the leaves is another valuable attachment.

The following may be luxuries, but they will help you do a professional job: a pressure sprayer, wheel hoe and cultivator, root feeder, spreader, soil-testing kit, garden tractor and lawn sweeper, or mechanical garden mower with mulching attachment, power rotary tiller, and, finally, an electric hotbed.

Power machines are certainly bringing about changes in gardening. For example, the mulching-mower allows you to mow the lawn in the usual way.

Grass and leaves are cut into small fragments and deposited beneath or to one side of the machine, where they sift down among the grass leaves and form a light, protective layer of mulch. This decomposes after a while, adding to the organic fertility of the lawn.

Other equipment to have on hand that will help keep you from running to the store just when you want to be out working on the grounds, includes: garden line; a yardstick, a measuring cup and spoons, plant ties, stakes, labels; burlap or canvas, chicken wire, sand, peat moss, lime, plant foods, insecticides and other chemicals and, finally, you may want to have some pots and flats handy.

Blood Diamonds – How Do You Know?

August 18, 2010

The story of blood diamonds is basically pretty simple, but just the term blood diamonds brings up horrendous images of people who have been subjected to unthinkable acts forced upon them by their own countrymen. I will use the term, blood diamonds, to refer to diamonds brought to market during the bloody civil war that occurred in Sierra Leone throughout the 90’s and that finally came to an end in 2002. The amount of blood diamonds produced during this period was a relatively small amount in comparison to total world production but it was enough to be a part of the funding for the rebels.

a bit of background…

I will simplify the story a bit in order to give some backdrop to what led up to this sad period of the human race. Sierra Leone was a British colony that gained independence in the early 60’s. Sierra Leone started off on its independence pretty well, because it had a relatively good infrastructure and it had already been mining diamonds since the 1930’s. In the late 60’s, a prime minister by the name of Siaka Stevens came into office. He proceeded to run the country into the ground until he and his successor were finally out of office by 1992. It was in the late 80’s and early 90’s that the anti-government group, the ruf, was formed. For the next 4 years, there was an ineffectual string of corrupt military people running the country. It was during this period that the ruf moved into the diamond producing area of eastern Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone’s diamonds are alluvial in nature… Alluvial diamonds are deposits of diamonds found in lowlands areas, in old river beds, in the beds of streams and shallow rivers. Diamonds are formed deep in the earth and come to the surface by way of volcanic eruptions and the resulting mountain of cooled lava ends up being eroded away by rain. The diamond rough is washed away and ends up in alluvial deposits. Most alluvial diamonds are usually found between a few feet to 20 feet below the surface. Relatively little capital and only basic technology (shovels, sieves, and muscles) are required to mine alluvial diamonds. These alluvial diamond mining areas are easily controlled by armed thugs.

In 1995, a group of “gunslingers” from south Africa, called executive outcomes, were hired and they cleaned up the problem of the ruf being in the diamond fields. The un stepped in, elections were held in 1996, and a former un official, Ahmad Tejan Kebbah, was elected the new president. Executive outcomes was asked to leave and in short order, the diamond producing area of Kono was again taken over by the ruf.

A horrible period in history!

it was at this point that the ruf began the horrendous act of cutting off people’s hands!!!! Why?… Because they had voted during the recent election! Amputations were designed to terrorize the population and it was very effective. It wasn’t however an action directly related to the diamond mining operations. It is the image of these brutal acts that has been forever linked to “blood diamonds”.

During the following 6 year period, the ruf teamed up with another thug, Charles Taylor, who was pillaging Sierra Leone’s next door neighbor, Liberia. Together the 2 groups were interested in power and would kill or terrorize anyone who got in their way. Blood diamonds was part of their economic and terror campaign. It finally came to a head, after the ruf had come into freetown and went on a nightmarish killing spree. The British then sent commandos into Sierra Leone to settle the situation in 2002.

The people of Sierra Leone are trying to move on but…

people became aware of the blood diamond situation, they took action, the civil war ended in 2002 and now the people of Sierra Leone have moved on and are trying to rebuild their country. An important funding source of their rebuilding efforts comes from the money brought in from diamond mining.

There are people in the jewelry business who are trying to make the situation better for everyone… Most notably, martin rapaport. There are 2 videos embedded on my website that explain some of the actions that are beginning to take place.

Being politically correct is never a good idea…

there are people who are not helping the situation of the Africans trying to modernize their countries. Some politically correct people, the “blood diamond Nazis”, are railing against the concept of anyone buying or owning a diamond because in their minds they see horrible atrocities every time that they look at any diamonds, they see “blood diamonds”. It has become their mission to spread the word by disseminating out dated facts that are not correct and it is these “facts” that do a lot of harm to the millions of people in these emerging countries. These “blood diamond Nazis” will not rest until everyone stops purchasing and wearing diamonds. They are ultimately hurting the Africans that they claim they are trying to help.

There are some suppliers of diamonds and diamond simulants that are taking advantage of everyone’s disdain of the concept of blood diamonds by promoting the fact that it is their products that are the alternative to blood diamonds… Most notably the people who sell diamond simulants (cubic zirconia or moissanite) or who sell “ethical diamonds” from regions other than africa. In addition, there are some organizations that still want to keep the idea of blood diamonds alive in people’s minds… They do this mostly for fund raising purposes-

– “you can help put a stop to blood diamonds by sending in your donation now!?”

– “attention webmasters!, make a donation to our effort and you can put this “stop blood diamonds!” Logo on your website to show your visitors that you really care about the people of sierra Leone!

When you go to these groups’ websites… Their “up to date” reference material about blood diamonds is from 1998 to 2001 and some of the information even dates back to 1982.

It is unbelievable that some people are using images of sierra Leone amputees to promote buying Canadian “ethical diamonds”, or to promote buying diamond stimulants, or used for fund raising purposes. Anytime you see these images be aware that these people are trying to manipulate you at the same time that they are helping only themselves and not helping the people in the photos! These people, the “not for profit” ngos and the for profit companies, they want you to believe that there is currently a blood bath going on in parts of Africa and this situation can totally be blamed on conflict diamonds. I have never seen a photo or a video of, or heard a report about a piece of diamond rough picking up a rifle and killing someone. People did all of these horrible things to other people.

Where do we go from here?

Sierra Leone’s war is over, sierra Leone’s blood diamonds are in the past. The amount of “conflict diamonds” only accounts for 0.02% of yearly worldwide diamond production… This would make it extremely unlikely that you’d ever encounter a conflict diamond! If you looked at one diamond a day, every single day, it would take 13.7 years before you would come across a conflict diamond… I guess it’s about the same chance of getting struck by lightning!

Today, the African people need the rest of the world to look at diamonds as things of beauty and for people to feel good about diamonds! To encourage people to not buy any diamonds or to discriminate against African diamonds in favor of “ethical diamonds” from non-African countries does not help the people in Africa build hospitals, roads, and schools.

Several years ago, I had the honor of hearing a speech from Erkki Nghimtina, Namibian minister of mines and energy. I referred back to my notes, along with some informational handouts from the speech… And here is the African’s current view of the diamond trade-

Every diamond not purchased is a missed chance for Africa – a missed opportunity to send more children to school, build more clinics and hospitals, and continue the fight against hiv/aids. Our challenge is to work together to strengthen the continent’s diamond industry so that we can better provide for our people, enabling us all to share a brighter future.
